Administrative history

In 1888, following University approval, St Cuthbert's Society was set up as a non-residential college for mature and local students who did not wish to reside in either Hatfield Hall or University College and instead preferred to lodge in houses within Durham City. In order to distinguish itself from residential colleges, it was given the title 'Society'. A member of University staff was appointed to oversee the running of the Society, referred to as a Censor, and the students were mature and traditionally from the local area who tended to have family responsibilities.
Initially, the Society did not have any space of its own, and was reported to have spent a great deal of time monopolising the chairs by the Union Society fire, much to the annoyance of other students. This came to a head in 1892 as the St Cuthbert’s men were having difficulty finding a place to hold their meetings. After a collective letter to the Durham University Journal outlining their grievances, they were granted access to St Cuthbert’s Room in what was then titled University House, and is now Cosin’s Hall on Palace Green. It became home to the Society for over fifty years.
After the second world war, in 1946, the St Cuthbert's Society was "refounded" and the University appointed its first Principal, a member of academic staff, to manage the Society. In 1947 the Society was allocated a room on Owengate, beside the Castle, along with 30 Church Street to offer its members more space to meet, but with over 200 students as part of the Society it was still impossible to entertain everyone in the new premises. It was not until 1951 that St Cuthbert's Society settled at 12 South Bailey, which is still the nucleus of the Society. During that year it contained the Principal’s Office, a JCR, the first ever SCR, and was also home to six students of the Society, whilst the rest of the students continued to live in houses in the local community. This was the first time that members of the Society had ever had accommodation on University premises, and it was in high demand. More accommodation was acquired on the Bailey (13 South Bailey with the Wendy House in 1952; 8 South Bailey in 1964; 27 North Bailey in 1984) over the next thirty years and more recently at Parson's Field on Old Elvet.
It now comprises approximately 1,300 students. Throughout its history, St Cuthbert's Society has often been diagnosed with having an identity crisis: during its early years its members were keen to portray the Society as entirely independent from the University, and much debate was had over its status as it began to acquire more space and living quarters for its students. Today, St Cuthbert's Society's relationship with the University is formalised as that of a college, yet it still retains the independence of spirit founded by its predecessors, whilst offering its students all the advantages of being officially part of Durham University. In 2008 the University agreed to allow Cuth's to retain the title of 'Society' as a reflection of its heritage.

College records reflect all aspects of the college's life and may include minutes of its governing body/council and other committees, registers and files of its students, administrative and financial papers of its officers such as the master/principal and bursar (including covering maintenance of the buildings), also minutes, accounts, photographs and ephemera of the running of the dining halls and chapels, of the common rooms (senior, middle and junior), and of the student sports clubs and societies, with also on occasion papers of some of the senior and/or junior members, and some artefacts, principally occasional items of clothing such as ties, blazers, tee-shirts or specific college memorabilia.

Appraisal

Some accessions are appraised on site before transfer, others are appraised when received at Palace Green. Clean duplicates are generally removed.

Accruals

Continuous further accruals are anticipated. In April 2004, a retention schedule and other records management procedures were developed for the university's records to facilitate the regular transfer of records from the university's departments and offices to the archive. This draft retention schedule was developed further on the appointment of the first university records manager in August 2006, and reviewed in 2019.

Reference: UND/F12/BB Governing Body on 24 April 1951 appointed a House Committee “to advise the principal on all matters connected with the occupation and administration of the headquarters building, with power to act on behalf of the Governing Body when so desired by the Principal ...”. It first met on 28 May 1951 at 6 Owengate. By [1971], its brief had expanded to advising the principal on all matters connected with the facilities and administration of the Society's buildings, to receive and discuss recommendations from the JCR for this, and to serve as the general committee of the St Cuthbert's Club, thereby receiving statements of the liabilities and assets of the Club bar.

It plays music across the genres and, as well as concerts, performs at many events across Durham from college balls to formals to vice-chancellor's garden parties. The members are mainly, but not exclusively, from St Cuthbert's. It recorded its first album in Easter Term 2012.

Boat Club
Reference: UND/F12/E8 In Epiphany term of 1894 Cuth's Boat Club performed unusually well in the Senate Challenge Cup and so was permitted to build its own boathouse during the summer of the same year, completed in 1895. The Boat Club has grown in strength ever since and remains one of the most popular sports undertaken by members of the Society. The year after its founding the Club won its first trophy, the Challenge Pairs, at Durham Regatta, and in its early years was most successful in sculling, with H.S.S. Jackson, E.C. Summers, H. de l’Isle Booth and T.M. Falconer enjoying success. The Club made their first visit to the Tideway in 1966 for the Head of the River Race. The Boat Club’s highest finishes on the Tideway are 137th at HORR (1993) and 102nd in WeHORR (1994). Another notable success came in the mid to late 1980s, when the men's crew (Henry Blackshaw, Daniel Tomlinson, Chris Lawrence and Tim Pitt coxed by Patrick Hurley) made the leap from Novices to Elite status in only one year. Meanwhile, in the same year the women’s crew (consisting of Elaine Hamilton, Vicky Foulsham, Elspeth Lindsley and Dawn Cox, coxed by Patrick Hurley) almost repeated the great feat and qualified to race at Women’s Henley.
