The secretarial practice of the Mahdist government

The lithographic press together with all imported stationery in the administrative offices of the Egyptian government in Khartoum were captured by the Mahdists on the fall of the capital on 26 January 1885. Enough stationery was seized to serve the needs of the Mahdist government until its fall in 1898 though it is possible that small supplies were imported through merchants at Aswan and Suakin. During the siege of Khartoum General Gordon had a series of currency notes (items Nos. 100-101) lithographed on the press of which the succeeding Mahdist government performed the whole of its lithographic work. The Mahdists first operated the press in its original room in the hukumdariya in Khartoum but transferred it during the months of Sha`ban and Ramadan 1304 (April-June 1887) to the new Mahdist capital of Omdurman.
The organization of the Mahdist press (al-matba `at al-mahdiya)
See Sudan Intelligence Report No.60, 25 May - 31 December 1898, p.56.
For a list of books lithographed on the press, see ibid., p.63.
Towards the close of the regime the organisation was as follows:-ControllerMukhtar Mahmud Badai, a DunqulawiChief printerMuhammad Zuhni, a muwalledCopyistHasan Salab Salih b. al-HusanyniCorrector`Umar al-Azhari, a muwalledChief bookbinderal-Jak al-Suyuff, said to have been an Egyptian Of the calligraphers of the regime three were held in high repute: `Abd al-Ghani al Salawi, a Turk; Muhammad al-Amin, who came from the west and wrote in sakrawi hand, a variant of the maghrabi; Ibrahim Muhammad b. `Abd Allah al-Dalil, of lesser repute, and Hasan Salab Salih b. al-Husayni, universally considered the finest of them all, who reduced the lost 2nd impression of the Mahdi's ratib (see footnote at no. 274a below) to lithography.
The clerks of the Khalifa `Abd Allahi's central government maintained a centralized letter book. As it was kept up to date it contained documents in their final form. From this letter book all the documents in the various collections of letters were copied. By contrast, collections of letters copied from the provincial letter books to a large extent represent the original form of the documents.

Contents

This small group of Arabic manuscripts and lithographs belongs almost entirely to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some of the items concern trivial matters, others are incidental to a parallel, and much larger correspondence in English. The remainder includes the most important group of Sudanese Mahdist documents outside the archives of the Ministry of the Interior in Khartoum and in private hands in the Sudan.
The papers of Sa`id Pasha Shoucair (Shuqayr) contain documents concerning the finances of the Sudan (1909-34) and of Palestine and Syria (1918-20). All items not described as lithographs are manuscripts.

Accession details

Most of the Arabic manuscripts and lithographs were collected by Sir Rudolf Baron Slatin and General Sir Reginald Wingate. The Slatin papers were deposited with the School of Oriental Studies in January 1961 by the Pasha's daughter, Mrs. Arthur Ponsonby; the Wingate papers were presented in April 1958 by the General's son, Sir Ronald Wingate. The latter gift excluded some Mahdist letter books and other documents originally part of the Wingate papers but which had been sold shortly after General Wingate's death in 1953. These were purchased in February 1960 mainly through the generosity of former officials of the Sudan Government, and returned to the body of the Wingate papers. A further, smaller, collection of Mahdist documents from the Wingate papers was purchased by the University of Durham from a private owner in November 1961.

These pages are missing from all other known copies except one of SAD 99/4 in the Sudan Archive. This 1st edition of the Indharat, bound in blue-tinted paper, comprised copies of 31 letters from the Mahdi dated between 1298 [1880-81] and 1301 [1883-1884] was ready for issue in Sha`ban 1304 [April/May 1887]. The letters were not placed in chronological or any other known order and the last proclamation is incomplete. Only two letters were dated and three were written in the margins as though inserted after the text was written. The text contains copyist's mistakes. In brief, the first was an inferior edition and it was almost certainly never issued.

The Khalifa `Abd Allahi's council in Sha`ban 1304 [April/May 1887] discussed a project for issuing a second lithographed edition of the Indharat as the council probably felt that the first edition should be replaced by a more worthy successor. The second edition is written in a different hand from the first edition and the contents are arranged in time order. It early became the definitive edition and most of the later letter books of the Mahdi were copied from it. Only one imprint of vol. I was made. There is another copy (ff.152, 36.5 x 26.5 cm) in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (MS. No. 6129). A xerographed impression, with explanatory notes by the staff of the Central Archives, Minister of the Interior, Khartoum, pp. 290 viii, pinned, paper-bound, was issued (al-Khartum 1963).

The above copy is of the 2nd edition as also is xerographed copy, with explanatory note by the Central Archives, pp. iii + 316 +xii (table of contents) paper bound, pinned, Khartoum, 1963. There is another copy in the India Office Library.
Audiences (Majalis) of the Mahdi As the Caliph Abu Bakr called the young Muslim community to write down the spoken words of the Prophet so the Khalifa `Abd Allahi called the Mahdist community to read the still unwritten public utterances of the Mahdi. Item no. 266 is the earliest known example of the response. The complier was for some time qadi of al-Qadarif.

Muhammad Ahmad b. `Abd Allah, al Mahdi. [ Manshurat sayyidina al-imam al-Mahdi], a collection of letters, proclamations and sayings of the Mahdi. This is an altogether inferior majlis to no. 266. It contains many mistakes of transcription especially in dates. Most of the contents were copied, if inaccurately, from the lithographed volumes of the Manshurat [nos. 264, 265]. Three other books of majalis are known to exist in the Sudan.

The Book of Devotion (al-Ratib) of the Mahdi Shaykh `Abdullahi Ahmad Abu Jalaha ( Sudan Notes and Records, Khartoum, xxi, 1938, p. 90) recounted a saying attributed to the Mahdi that the Prophet revealed the Ratib to him immediately after the battle of Shaykan (3-5 November 1883). Others attribute its origin to 1881-1882. In 1302 A.H. [1884/1885] the Mahdi made, or caused to be made, and corrected, a master copy in manuscript which he deposited with his head scribe al-Muddaththir Ibrahim al-Hajjaz. There were three impressions lithographed in Khartoum and Omdurman: the first impression, transcribed by `Abd al-Karim al-Kinani and corrected in lithograph by Mahdi himself, is no. 274a. All copies of the second impression, which was done in Shawwal 1304 H. [July 1886] are believed to have been lost. The third impression is no. 274b. Items nos. 274a and 274b are said to be the only surviving copies.

The Ratib with other Mahdist documents, was a prohibited book from 1899 to 1925, thought latterly the prohibition was not enforced and was unenforceable . The Director of Intelligence, Khartoum, wrote to the Governor, Kassala on 23 February 1925: “Secret …. In view of the innocuous, not to say improving nature of the doctrines inculcated in the Ratib, it does not seem reasonable or possible to prohibit its sale.” (Sudan Government Archives, Khartoum, Intelligence File, class 7/1/3). 4000 Copies of this impression were lithographed in Cairo and sold in the Sudan at 200 milliemes a copy. A second large impression followed (Muhammad `Umar Bashir, “Abdel Rahman ibn Hussein el Jabri and his MS. Book” [etc.] Sudan Notes and Records, xliv, 1963, p. 137).
