Title: Durham University Music exercises
Dates of creation: 1891-1980
Extent: 15 metres.
Held by: Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections
Origination: music exercises (original compositions submitted to the University for Durham music degrees)
Language:
English
Until almost the end of the 19th century, music degrees by examination were granted in England only by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and London. Candidates were also required, however, to show competence in such other subjects as classics
and mathematics. These regulations found increasing disfavour among the growing body of professional musicians, many of whom had begun their musical studies at an early age and received only a moderate general education. Demand grew for a degree
which would be a test of professional ability rather than an academic course. In 1889 Durham University began awarding music degrees which called for high musical ability but only general educational qualifications and which had no residential
requirement. Response was immediate. Eighty candidates sat for the first examination in 1890. By the inter-war period Durham music graduates probably outnumbered those from the Music faculties of all other English universities put together.
Exercises in original composition were required for both the B.Mus and D.Mus degrees, and later the M.Mus., and the University Library now contains an extensive series of these compositions, deposited by the candidates, many of whom became
noteworthy members of the musical establishment.
Changes in the degree regulations eventually led to the phasing out of these external degrees. The last compositions were deposited in 1980. Citations of them should be given in the form Durham University Library, Music Exercise followed by the
appropriate number from this list.
Each composition submitted by composer.
The compositions are in chronological order, sub-divided into degree awarded. Those numbered with an "x" are stored at the end of the collection, although listed in their place in the sequence.
