Administrative History

In 1902 the Revd F.S. Willoughby began to train up men of limited means to enter one of the established theological colleges at his vicarage of Hooton Pagnell, near Doncaster. Churchmen of the time were conscious of a need for more clergy to meet the needs of an increasing population but ordinations were falling. Lack of resources to finance ordinands' education was seen as a factor. Mr (Howard) Douglas Horsfall, a wealthy Liverpool businessman and munificent patron of the Church in Liverpool, had similar ideals and took a generous and active interest in the scheme. The Hooton Pagnell experiment thrived and Mrs Warde-Aldam provided a building with rooms for students and a large lecture room. Numbers quickly rose to 40.
It soon became apparent however that this essentially private venture needed a connection with a public authority. The Durham graduates, the Revd S.R.P. Moulsdale and the Revd H.F. Wilson, took the initiative from Willoughby, who had resigned. They sought a licence to open a house of residence in Durham in connection with the University. So St Chad's Hall was opened in October 1904 at 1 South Bailey with 19 students who now had the opportunity to combine a university degree course with training for the Anglican priesthood. Horsfall supported the scheme and the Revd Moulsdale became the principal of the new hall supported by a Council. Dr Wilson was Vice-Principal in Durham and the Revd S.W.L. Richards was vice-principal at Hooton Pagnell. A new hostel was opened at Hooton Pagnell in October 1904 and prepared 13 students for Durham. The fall in numbers during the First World War meant that this closed in 1916.
St Chad's was incorporated in 1910. It was granted the style and title of college in 1919 and admitted its first fellow then. Though it only formally changed from St Chad's Hall to St Chad's College in 1976, it had become a fully constituent college of the university in 1923 under its own independent council.
St Chad's retained the Oxford Movement Anglo-Catholic tradition of its founders in its role as a theological college with its initial endowments being given for the purpose of recruiting for the ministry of the Church of England. However its members were soon taking a variety of Arts degrees and participating in all university organisations and sports.
As its numbers grew, so its site expanded, with much of this early development being financially underwritten by Douglas Horsfall. First 28 North Bailey was leased from Durham Dean and Chapter in 1906. A boathouse was also built then. A new chapel followed in 1909 and the original leased site of 1 South Bailey was purchased in 1910.
After the First World War, accommodation pressures meant that first Cosin's Hall, then Abbey House on Palace Green, and then Spencer House in Dun Cow Lane were used before further property in North Bailey was acquired in 1925, named Douglas House after the college's great benefactor Douglas Horsfall. Next 37 North Bailey was acquired, then additional accommodation was built on the original South Bailey site in 1930 and a chapel was constructed at Douglas House in 1928. Away from Durham, the college's endowment included a number of advowsons by 1939: four in Liverpool (acquired in 1927) and others in County Durham, Leicestershire, Shropshire and Suffolk. Further physical developments in Durham in the early 1960s included the building of the dining hall in Bow Lane in 1961, and 16, 17 and 18 North Bailey being joined together to become the present ‘Main College’ during 1961-1963. 1 South Bailey was exchanged with St John's College in 1965 for 22 and 22A North Bailey. Bow Cottage was abandoned in 1976 and No 30 Hallgarth bought in its place.
St Chad's ceased to train men for the priesthood in 1972. By 2002, it comprised men and women reading for degrees in all subjects and at all levels. It awards some 40 scholarships, exhibitions and prizes annually to undergraduates and postgraduates. The College is administered by its Council with the Bishop of Durham as the Visitor. The chief officers are the Principal, the Senior Tutor and Development Director, Chaplain and Bursar with staff comprising tutors, fellows, honorary fellows, a librarian and an honorary librarian. It is still the patron of nine livings, including five in Liverpool. Further information on the present college can be found at https://www.stchads.ac.uk/
