Claude Collier Abbott (1889-1971)

Abbott grew up near Chelmsford and became a teacher in London and Middlesbrough, while studying French and English part-time at London as a external student. He did research work on Beddoes at Cambridge and completed his doctoral thesis on Darley in 1926. Abbott lectured in English at the University of Aberdeen from 1921-1932, was appointed Professor of English at the University of Durham 1932, and made an Emeritus Professor on his retirement in 1954. He edited the Durham University journal from 1939-1952. Among his scholarly publications, those most closely related to his collection of literary manuscripts are his editions of correspondence of Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), and his critical biography of the poet George Darley (1795-1846). Abbott was a collector of 19th and 20th century British art as well as manuscripts and books, with an interest in the Pre-Raphaelites spanning all three collecting fields. His manuscript collection and his papers were bequeathed to the University of Durham, his library to the University of East Anglia, and his art collection to Carlisle Art Gallery.

Contents

The collection, largely of 19th and 20th century English literary manuscripts and correspondence, with a little 18th century material, are closely related to Abbott's own research interests, particularly in George Darley, the Rossetti family and the Pre-Raphaelites, and the poet Edward Thomas (1878-1917). The more notable items include letters of John Wolcot “Peter Pindar” (ca. 1738-1819), manuscripts and correspondence of George Darley, 37 letters from Dante Gabriel Rossetti to the book illustrator and artist F.J. Shields (1833-1911), 22 letters from Gerard Manley Hopkins to the poet Coventry Patmore, letters of Edward Thomas including extensive correspondence with his literary agent C.F. Cazenove, and letters of Hugh Walpole and André Gide.

Conditions of access

Open for consultation.

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Arrangement

The collection has at some point been sorted into alphabetical order of correspondent, which has unfortunately broken up the coherence of the groups of correspondence and made them less easy to follow (some correspondents were also not identified, which has now further broken up the sequence). Printed volumes have been moved to the SC special collections printed book sequence, and are catalogued on the Library catalogue as well.
Edward Thomas The main body of Thomas material is from the files of the Literary Agency of London, a group of papers which Abbott apparently purchased in 1931. These are now scattered through the collection in smaller parts, but most can be recognised by the number “305” written on them (presumably the filing code): ABL 1, 2, 6-135, 204-207, 210-218, 226-227, 286-576. There is also another group, letters to Abbott by people who knew Thomas: ABL 219-220, 284. Books and articles by Thomas are referred to inconsistently within the correspondence as publishers or their requirements change.
John Wolcot ABL 208-209, 221-224, 590-598.
Pre-Raphaelites ABL 5, 203, 231-234, 235-276, 277-279, 280-281, 282.

Accruals

There is further material that would be regarded as literary amongst Abbott's papers but which has remained in that sequence. This will be catalogued with the Abbott Papers.

Finding aids

A typescript list giving only the date of correspondence was produced in the 1970s.
A.D. Burnett, The Abbott collection of literary manuscripts: an introduction with the catalogue of an exhibition (Durham, 1975) describes those items included in the exhibition and gives contextual information on the major groups within the collection.
