Cut-throat razor - As the Sudanese woman was circumcised at the age of 7 years it was necessary to re-open the labias to allow presentation of the head during childbirth. Once opened, the labias were not re-stitched by the professional midwife, but the practice of 're- stitching' was performed by the 'back street' midwife. This razor was also used in performing an episiotomy. It was not used for the removal of pubic hair, as it is customary for the Sudanese woman to remain shaven as from the day of her wedding, when she is prepared as a bride.
