The first part of the material now in the custody of Archives and Special Collections comprises deeds, papers, wayleaves, wills, opinions, court papers and plans, relating to the family, landed estates and coal and other business interests and
connections of the Stuarts, Marquesses of Bute (including their inheritance from the Claverings of Axwell, Co. Durham), centring on Tanfield, Lanchester, Winlaton, Ryton and Whickham, Co. Durham but also mentioning other Bute property in England,
Scotland, Wales (Glamorgan) and Ireland.
These Bute papers span 1598-1896 and are mainly 18th and 19th century. They, some nineteen boxes and trays, were listed on loan to Durham County Record Office in 1983, to maintain the same system of reference in two groups of inter-related
documents deposited in the two places (references to other documents within the list that start "D/" are to papers at the County Record Office).
Of the second batch of Clayton and Gibson material, mainly 18th and 19th century, eight boxes relate to St. Anthony's Estate and to Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne and Jarrow Grange Estate, Co. Durham and concern the Ellison and Bonner families among
others and another nine boxes are Ellison family material and include wills, marriage settlements, deeds relating to Hebburn, Gateshead, a glass house there, the Brandling Junction Railway Co. and other business interests.
Deposited in two parts, firstly one wooden box through Sir William Gibson, of the lawyers Clayton and Gibson, late of 7 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, presumably on behalf of the Marquess of Bute, at the Prior's Kitchen, Durham, while James
Conway Davies was Reader in Palaeography and Diplomatic (1948-1957), secondly two containers, again from Clayton and Gibson, at the Prior's Kitchen on 5 July 1962.
The archival papers of the solicitors Clayton and Gibson were divided for
deposit, with unavoidable arbitrary divisions of related material, among local repositories north and south of the Tyne.

part of the ground a house for a female teacher and a schoolhouse to be called Lady Flora's School (which is to be in connection with the established Church of Scotland) and upon trust to apply the rents of the remainder of the property for the
benefit of the said school.
The income from £4,000 Rhymney Railway stock to be applied for the benefit of Lady Adelaide Augusta Lavinia Hastings (sister) for life who is bound to pay various pensions to aged retainers, thence with remainders as specified (favouring those
called Flora and against those called Victoria).
All jewels etc bequeathed to her by her late husband shall be settled on her son the Marquess as heirlooms to pass with the Glamorgan estates. Recommends Col. Charles Stuart, Sir Francis Hastings Gilbert, Bart and Lady Elizabeth Moore as
guardians of son. If son dies without issue the jewels are to form the endowment of alms houses near Edinburgh (to be called the Flora almshouses) for the widows and daughters of officers in the British or Indian Armies in necessitous
circumstances.
